A few years ago, a few of my Facebook friends joined me on a journey called 40 to 40. I had been inspired by an article that I read describing things you should do/places you should visit, etc. before turning a certain age. Well, in the days leading up to my 40th birthday, I invited whosoever was interested to join me on what I labeled "40 to 40". During that time we would try new things, take an introspective look at our lives and create new memories! Now, I'm at it again. Only this time, I'm inviting each of you to join me for an entire year. In the year of 2017, I invite you to join with me as we Recharge, Restore and Renew!
If you decide to join me, each month we will work on items for that month's theme. By the end of the year, it is my prayer that we all will be changed for the better and will be able to shine a little light in this world!
So, on your mark, get set, let's go!!!
2017- Time to Recharge, Restore & Renew
Get some rest! Set a regular bedtime and stick to it. Physical, Mental and Emotional Exhaustion can be bad for your health and can be detrimental to fulfilling your purpose. Set a goal for the month of January to get some rest. We’ve got a full year ahead of us so let’s be sure to rest up and prepare!
What better way to celebrate the month of love than to embrace and hug someone daily! As Pastor Mays is reminding us consistently that, as Christians, we must love everyone, not just those we like or care about. We must love and we must show love. I know it’s easy to hug a family member or a friend, but, for this month, let’s set out to hug and show love to someone we normally would not embrace. And, yes, let’s do this DAILY!
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 NIV. Take the time to begin, renew or commit to a meditation routine. Dig into the scriptures, journal, and/or pray. If this is new for you, you can start slowly, but be sure to set aside some time every day in March to renew your mind.
April- Self Love
This can either be a very easy assignment or it can be very hard. But, for April let’s commit to saying at least one thing you love about yourself every day! Let’s make it more of a challenge by saying something different each day. Take the time to find one thing about yourself that you love that’s different from the previous days. Let’s fall in love with ourselves!
Look around you. Often in restaurants, family events, etc., most persons that are supposed to be together, aren’t. The reason for this is because of that little device that we hold in our hands which was designed to connect us. Unfortunately, it does more dividing than anything else. So, for May, let’s commit to reconnect with those around us. Let’s set a "screen time" limit for ourselves. Let’s aim to avoid distracting calls, texts and emails during certain hours or times. Let’s aim to turn off our computers and smartphones for a little bit each day. Life is so short. Let’s reconnect with our friends and loved ones in 2017!
Go ahead, do it. Put “Playtime” on your calendar and on your schedule. Take time in June to spend time with your family and friends. Take time to have some fun. Enjoy life while you have a chance!
July- Pay It Forward
We’re all familiar with the idea of “Pay It Forward”. But, many times paying it forward involves doing something for someone financially. Might I suggest doing something for someone else that won’t cost a dime? Give someone else a compliment each day. That’s it. Taking a moment to put a smile on someone else’s face and building their self-esteem will, in fact, help to build yours.
August- Daily Words
Let’s go “old school”. Pull out that dictionary and randomly discover a word you don’t know. Discover a new word daily and then begin using it throughout your day. Find a way to include it in your vocabulary and watch your communication skills grow!
September- Get out
Now, this will be a challenge for me. I’m not a big fan of the outdoors. BUT, during September, let’s find time to get out more. Let’s spend more time enjoying the great outdoors!
Let’s celebrate! October is my birth month and I plan on celebrating my trip around the sun each day. If October is not your birth month, why not take this time to make plans for your own birth month to celebrate your anniversary around the sun. In 2017, let’s commit to celebrating another year on this earth and not fear growing older. Let’s celebrate!
November- Be Grateful
In this season of Thanksgiving, let’s be sure to show our gratitude. In November, we will list one thing we are grateful for daily. It can be a journal entry, a post or however you’d like to do it. The idea is to look back at the end of the month and be reminded of all of our blessings!
Do you remember who you were before the world told you who you should be? Or before the world changed you into who you are? Years ago, an ex-boyfriend asked me what happened to the girl he met our freshman year in college? That girl was so full of life. My reply to him was, “I don’t know.” Several experiences in college had changed me, and not in a good way. No, I’m not saying that we need to erase what has happened to us. It’s because of those experiences that we are who we are today. What I’m suggesting is that we would hold on to the lessons that we’ve learned while restoring and reestablishing who we once were. We’ve all heard the saying, “If I only knew then what I know now”. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines restore as returning something to an earlier or original condition by repairing it, cleaning it, etc. Before we go into a new year, let’s be sure to work on whatever needs to be fixed in our lives. Whether that be relationships, our appearance, our career, etc. During December let’s commit to clearing out old junk, both literally and figuratively. A few years ago I adopted a them for that year as the year of “Getting Back to D”. This December, let’s commit to restoring ourselves to our original condition, our as close as we can get.
